Together with September 11th 2001, Hurricane Katrina’s landfall in Lousiana at the end of August 2005 was perhaps the defining moment of modern US history. The architecture of American society was stripped bare for the world to see, and it was found to be more shaky, unsafe and neglected than all but the most sceptical had supposed.
Katrina tells the stories of this most American tragedy. Through music and verbatim testimony the performers will take the audience on a journey through the immediate aftermath of Katrina, introducing them to those who allowed it to happen and those citizens of New Orleans who survived. The text is composed entirely of accounts provided by both survivors and those responsible for the relief effort, and sheds light on some of the more extraordinary and under-reported aspects of the disaster.
Throughout the play the soundtrack features indigenous New Orleans music. The score is designed to act as a parallel and contrapuntal auditory language, freighted with thematic and narrative meaning, enhancing and departing from the visual and textual narratives as appropriate, depicting the hurricane and the sound of a flooded city.
The production will be staged in a multi-storey warehouse on London’s south bank, and will be accompanied by an extensive community outreach programme.
